Why Eleven?
Every album we review is scored using a 1–11 rating system – because sometimes 10 simply isn’t enough. Our scale reflects nuance rather than perfection, allowing space for solid efforts, near-classics, and those rare records that genuinely push the dial all the way to eleven.

“This site just gets it! I love reading up on behind-the-scenes stories about my favourite bands’ biggest albums.”

About Us
Rock music isn’t just something you listen to, it’s the soundtrack of our lives.
From the first riff that made your heart race to the chorus you can’t help but sing along to, great rock records don’t just entertain – they mean something.
These Go To Eleven exists to explore what makes those records matter. Not just the notes and the hooks, but the stories, the context, the history and the emotions behind the music.
Who I Am
Hi, I’m Russ Howe, founder and chief writer of These Go To Eleven.
I’ve been obsessed with rock music for as long as I can remember – from the tube headphones turning up GN’R and Bon Jovi in my teens, to a lifetime of discovering how great albums helped to shape culture, careers and memories.
What you’ll find here is opinionated writing. I don’t just tell you if an album is good, I I explain why it sounds the way it does, where it sits in history, and how it fits into a band’s long-term story.
What You’ll Find Here
These Go To Eleven concentrates on:
- In-depth album reviews – not tracklists, but analysis
- Historical context – because rock lives in time and place
- Songs as stories – what the music means, not just how it sounds
- Perspective over hype – we value insight over superlatives
Whether you’re a long-time fan, curious listener or fellow critic, this is a place for rock discussion with depth.
Why This Matters
There’s no shortage of listicles and star ratings online, but few places answer the real question:
Why do certain albums endure – and what makes them great?
This website exists to explore that question honestly, knowledgeably, and with a genuine love for the music.
